Septima Edición 2012

La edición 2012 de la Copa Patagonia, la séptima, tiene algunas diferencias con respecto a las anteriores: hemos agregado el sóftbol femenino sumando de esta manera cien deportistas; la competencia en hockey se consolida con la disputa de la segunda edición; por primera vez participa un equipo de Nueva Zelanda y contamos además con la posibilidad de jugar algunos partidos de hockey con la cancha iluminada. Estas novedades confirman que cada edición supera a la anterior.

Tal vez esta sea una de las claves que hacen que la Copa Patagonia perdure en el tiempo y que se haya convertido en un evento valorado por todos sus protagonistas. Pero hay otros factores que contribuyen a formar un tejido que crece de manera lenta y que son invisibles por su naturaleza misma. La constancia incondicional, el compromiso con la palabra empeñada y la seriedad que no se pone solemne, valores que compartimos entre todos los involucrados en la Copa Patagonia.

Y esto no es, como podría suponerse, un autoelogio sino un elogio en común, una caricia que todos necesitamos y que va dirigida a los clubes Sociedad Sportiva, Universitario, Argentino, Pacífico, Monte Hermoso, River Plate, Olivos, Christchurch High School Old Boys RFC, Southern Districts RFC, HSOB Burnside HC, Club El Nacional, Invitación Fin del Mundo (Ushuaia), Morón (Buenos Aires), Halcones (Buenos Aires), Butalo (Santa Rosa) y Estudiantes de Olavarría.

Entre todos hemos logrado algo que suponemos es único en el país y raro en todo el mundo: hemos aprendido a confiar y nos prodigamos una confianza mutua que hemos sabido ganarnos en base al más estricto respeto acompañado con el complemento de la indispensable cordialidad. Parece simple y sin embargo todos sabemos que no lo es.

Y como hay siempre un gran pero en cualquier mensaje aquí va el pero de rigor. Cuando hablamos de constancia, compromiso y consecuencia con la palabra empeñada coincidiremos en que todos pensamos en Ken Pope y su entrañable Christchurch High School Old Boys, The Greatest Little Rugby Club in the World, presente en las siete ediciones de la Copa Patagonia porque una vez dijo, en 1999, que su club participaría en cada edición de la Copa Patagonia, siempre que se lo invitara.

La ciudad de Christchurch sufrió dos terremotos, uno en Septiembre de 2010 y otro en Febrero de 2011, que resultaron en la destrucción prácticamente total de la zona céntrica y produciendo un daño irreparable en aproximadamente el sesenta por ciento de los hogares y de la infraestructura básica. La ciudad, que era una de las sedes centrales de la Rugby World Cup 2011, se quedó, de buenas a primeras, sin nada y sumida en la tristeza más absoluta.

Ni bien las comunicaciones se restablecieron, el 12 de Febrero recibimos un correo electrónico de Ken Poe diciendo que su familia y las familias del club estaban bien aunque muchas de sus casas habían sido destruídas, que el trago amargo sería superado tarde o temprano y que por su parte recon-firmaba, por si hiciera falta, la participación de Christchurch High School Old Boys, The Greatest Little Rugby Club in the World, en la Copa Patagonia 2012.

Ken Pope se ocupó, además, de conseguir un equipo de hockey femenino de Christchurch, High School Old Boys Burnside Hockey Club, y de asesorarlos y brindarles todo su apoyo y su experiencia en la organización de semejante empresa. Según Ken, la Copa Patagonia ha tenido para ellos más fuerza de convocatoria y ha generado más entusiasmo en los jóvenes y los dirigentes de Christchurch que la que tuvo la RWC, naturalmente debido a la frustración generada por la pérdida de la sede.

Y otro párrafo merece la presencia de Southern Districts RFC de Sydney, Australia, un prestigioso club de la primera división de New South Wales quienes participaron en la edición 2003, confirmando que la Copa Patagonia es un evento al cual todos quieren regresar.

La Comisión de Árbitros de la URS ha mantenido vivo el vínculo con la Canterbury Referees Association que se ha visto renovado con la participación de Chris Watt. Este programa de intercambio forma parte de un acuerdo firmado en 2005 entre la Unión de Rugby del Sur y la Unión de Canterbury. Por otra parte la Asociación de Árbitros de la URBA ha confirmado la participación del árbitro internacional Marcelo Pilara.

Cuando miramos hacia el futuro, nos referimos a 2014, podemos ver un torneo con más equipos de rugby, hockey y softbol provenientes de Sudáfrica, Australia y Nueva Zelanda, con algunos partidos nocturnos en las tres disciplinas, con más público y más esponsors.

En nombre del Club El Nacional queremos darles una cordial bienvenida a todas las delegaciones y desearles que disfruten del torneo, que se diviertan y que ganen los mejores.
This 2012 edition of the Patagonia Cup, the seventh, has a few differences with the former editions: we added women's softball with the inclusion of 100 players; the hockey competition grew stronger with more teams, local and regional; for the first time we are honored by the attendance of a New Zealand hockey team and we are proud to announce that some hockey games will be played under floodlights. This means that every edition betters the former.

This permanent evolution might be the key factor that makes of the Patagonia Cup a long-lasting event, nurtured and cherished by everyone involved. Though there are other factors that contribute to the growth of the tournament and are less visible and obvious due to their own nature. These factors are: the constancy without restrictions, the commitment with the word given and the seriousness that doesn't turn into solemnity, all values shared by the people involved in the Patagonia Cup.

And this is no flattery, as it could be thought, to pamper our own egos but a compliment for all, and one that all of us need and deserve, addressed to Sociedad Sportiva, Universitario, Argentino, Pacífico, Monte Hermoso, River Plate, Olivos, Christchurch High School Old Boys RFC, Southern Districts RFC, HSOB Burnside HC, Club El Nacional, Invitación Fin del Mundo (Ushuaia), Morón (Buenos Aires), Halcones (Buenos Aires), Butalo (Santa Rosa) and Estudiantes de Olavarría.

Working as a team we have achieved something that we suppose is unique in our country and unusual in the rest of the world: we have learned to trust each other and we treat each other with the utmost respect, coupled with the adornment of gentle cordiality. It looks very simple but we all know that it is not.

And as there is always a big but in every message, here it comes, the big but. When we speak of constancy, determination and respect to the word given we will agree that we instantly think in Mr. Ken Pope and his, and our's as well, beloved Christchurch High School Old Boys, The Greatest Little Rugby Club in the World, coming to take part for the seventh time in the Patagonia Cup because he once promised that he would come to each edition of the Patagonia Cup, provided that he was invited to come.

Christchurch suffered two big earthquakes, one in September 2010 and, the most destructive one, in February 2011 during which a huge part of the city was devastated including the city centre and almost sixty percent of the buildings in the nearby area which might need to be pulled down. The city which was designed to host many and very important games for the RWC was suddenly left with empty hands and sunk in the deepest of griefs.

As soon as communications were restored, on February 12th, we received an email from Ken Pope saying that the club's families and friends were ok though many houses were damaged, that it was a sad and bitter moment that rather sooner than later would be left behind and that he finally wanted to re-confirm the attendance of Christchurch High School Old Boys, The Greatest Little Rugby Club in the World to the Patagonia Cup in 2012.

Apart from that, Ken Poe, had time to contact HSOB Burnside HC and tell them about the tournament and help them with all his experience in the organization of such a trip. According to Ken Pope, the Patagonia Cup ended up having more importance for them than the RWC itself, obviously due to the deep frustration originated in the cancellation of the venue.

And another paragraph for the second participation of Southern University RFC from Sydney, a presitgeous club taking part of the New South Wales Premiership competition; they came for the first time in 2003 and their player Michael MacLeod “Macca” played for El Nacional in 2010 and now comes back to Bahía Blanca to see his host family and his many friends, and to play the Patagonia Cup.

The Referees Asociation of the URS kept alive their link with the Canterbury Referees Association and they are hosting Chris Watt as part of the development program signed by both unions back in 2005. On the other hand, the Asociación de Arbitros of the URBA has appointed the international referee Marcelo Pilara.

When we look towards the future, and we mean 2014, we can see more rugby, hockey and softball teams representing New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, with some rugby games being played under floodlights, with bigger crowds, nicer facilities and more sponsors.
